What is Microneedling?

Microneedling, also known as collagen induction therapy, is a minimally invasive procedure that can treat a wide range of skin concerns. Collagen is a protein naturally found in the skin and is largely responsible for skin elasticity and a firm, smooth texture. The natural aging process and environmental damage (like sun exposure) gradually cause collagen production to slow, leading to loose skin and wrinkles. Microneedling uses tiny needles to create controlled injuries in the skin’s surface, triggering the skin’s healing process and new collagen production.

This process also resurfaces new, healthy skin cells to improve the appearance of moderate to severe acne scars or surgical scars, hyperpigmentation, enlarged pores, fine lines and wrinkles, rough skin texture, and dull skin tone. While microneedling is mostly commonly performed on the face, it can also be used on the body to tighten aging skin and improve the appearance of stretch marks and scars.

Am I a Good Candidate for Microneedling?

Microneedling is safe for all skin types and skin tones, including darker skin tones. Its ability to treat many different skin conditions means it is an effective treatment for most patients. However, those who are smokers and those who have a history of bleeding disorders or keloid scarring might not be suitable candidates. Additionally, patients should not be pregnant or have an active skin infection at the time of treatment. A consultation with one of our expert providers is necessary to determine whether microneedling can safely and effectively meet your treatment goals. At this consultation, they will ask about your medical history and the conditions you wish to treat so that a customized treatment plan can be created.

How to Prepare for Microneedling

For 2-3 days before a microneedling session, patients should avoid blood-thinning medications (including ibuprofen and aspirin), excess sun exposure, and harsh skincare products like topical retinol. Patients should also avoid shaving the treatment area for 24 hours before treatment to avoid nicks or skin irritation. We also recommend that patients with a clean face free of makeup or skincare products.

The Microneedling Procedure

Microneedling treatment begins with a thorough cleansing of the treatment area and application of a topical anesthetic or numbing cream. The cream will be left on for a few minutes to take effect while the microneedling device is prepared. Once everything is ready, a handheld microneedling device equipped with multiple tiny needles will be passed over the skin.

You may feel a slight scratching sensation and warmth, but this should not be painful. Treatment takes an average of 30-60 minutes, but the time varies depending on the size of the treatment area and desired results.

“This is a great place to do your ‘fix ups’. Everything is explained to you so that you understand the process of your fix. If you do/don’t need something done they will be honest. I feel their number is not the money it is the patient. If you need or want some work done I would definitely refer you to these docs.”

Microneedling Results and Recovery

There is minimal downtime necessary after microneedling, so you should be able to resume almost all normal activities the next day. However, we recommend that you avoid strenuous exercise for a couple days to minimize swelling and discomfort. Mild redness, bruising, and swelling are common but will improve within a few days. Cold compresses and over-the-counter anti-inflammatory medication can be used to ease discomfort and reduce swelling.

A series of treatments scheduled a few weeks apart is typically recommended for optimal results. After your series of treatments, annual treatments can be scheduled to maintain your results. New collagen will gradually grow, revealing smoother and brighter skin, but it will take 3-6 months to see the full benefits of microneedling treatments.
